Abstract (EN)

Both acute and cronic intestinal ischemia and reperfusion are commonly faced problems at clinic. In this reseach the aim was to investigate the change of goblet cells by developing ischemia and reperfusion damage. In our experiment Spaeque Dawley type male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. These groups were; control group, sham group, ischemia group, and reperfusion group. Each study group was consisted of 8 rats. Following the end of the experiment, the jejunum graph taken from the rats were determined with 10 % neutral buffered formaline. Through the light microscobic investigation it was determined that villi of the rats applied ischemia lost their usual leaf shaped structures in almost every field, had morphological changes from segmetation to villus atrophy. Therefore it was observed that epithelium did not exist in most of the sites or lost its permanence in some sites. İt was also observed that the number of the goblet cells in the epithelium was less than the control group and their lenghts were smaller. On the other hand there was not any decrease in the numbers of goblet cells on the crypts. In ischemia and reperfusion groups there were less signs in comparison with the damage observed in ischemia group. However villus heights were lower but that were not as low as those in the ischemia group. The number of the goblet cells in the epithelium were similar to the control group, but goblet cell sizes were decreased as those in the ischemia group. We considered that goblet cells in villi decreased due to lumen of the ischemia, the rest seemed small as they depleted their secretion but the mucin content was not affected, in the I/R process goblet cell number became normal because of the goblet cells coming from the villi from the crypts. However cells in the crypts decreased in number and seemed small as that depleded the secretion of the goblet cells. In Conclusion the role of goblet cells in the jejunal injury and repair process associated ischemia and reperfusion in rats could not be determined clearly. Therefore further research should be carried out.Key Words: Ischemia/ Reperfusion, Goblet Cell, Jejunum
