Discussions on equality of men and women with the discourse of Islamism in the Modernizing Ottoman Empire

The aim of this thesis is to examine the effects of the Islamism movement, which once influenced the Islamic world, on Turkish society in the Ottoman Empire from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the Constitutional Era, through the debates on equality between men and women. The contribution of the research to the social and modernization process is discussed for both genders. The thesis was first prepared by explaining some basic concepts and then by preparing a short literature review on Ottoman Islamism. While the study was being implemented, the ideas of the Islamist intellectuals of the period, the basic works made in Turkey about the Modernization and Constitutional Monarchy period were primarily used. Apart from this, due to the fact that some concepts have a Western and Islamic synthesis, besides Turkish, English sources were also used. While the study was being implemented, the Islamist Intellectuals of the Ottoman Empire period, Mustafa Sabri Efendi (1869-1954), Musa Kazım Efendi (1858- 1920), Said Halim Pasha (1864-1921) and Mehmet Şemsettin Günaltay (1883- 1961), gendered the Islamic discourse of the period, came forward with their ideas. Islamist intellectuals discussed and produced discourses on the women's issue on the basis of covering, polygamy, women's education, women's private/family duties, women's participation in business life/public life.
