Socialization and self-presentation in İslamic marriage sites

Abstract (EN)

Based on the advancements occured in information Technologies, te use of internet is gradually increasing. Most of the activities made by individuals in daily life can also be made through the social media within the internet. The activities of indivuals are defined through networks in this new society, so called the "new society". This study focuses on how individuals who are members of Muslim matrimonial websites, which we can define as kind of social networks, look at marriage and how the internet shaping both socialization and mate selection processes. At the same time, it was emphasized that individuals who prefer Islamic marriage sites experienced a change in the perception of traditional marriage models. The self-construals of those members are tired to be investigated through the Goffman's dramaturgical analysis and those constructed selfnesses are tired to be axplained according to the two categories namely the image and gender. The formation of identities in modern life is explained on the axis of consumption and image. In the study, it is seen that the individuals who are members of Islamic marriage sites experienced a change in the perceptions of tradition. Limited individuality is at the forefront in the change of this traditional model. While those marriage sites are providing a dating opportunity to their users, a kind of a traditionality is also being built afresh at the same time. We can define those sites as a kind of a görücü system which also includes dating additionally.
