Islamic feminism and the case of Sisters in Islam movement

The aim of this paper is to highlight the actions of the Malaysian-based Sisters in Islam (SIS) community under the name of Islamic feminism in the context of the fundamental demands and critiques of Islamic feminism. The first part of the study, which consists of three parts, discusses the emergence, spread and basic ideas of the feminist school of international relations, which has taken its place in the discipline of international relations since the late 1980s. The second part provides a general overview of Islamic feminism, which has become increasingly vocal in countries with high Muslim population density, particularly in Türkiye, Iran, Egypt and Malaysia, with the rise of third wave feminism since the 1990s. The last part of the study deals with the emergence, claims, activities, problems, goals and achievements of the Sisters in Islam community, an Islamic feminist organization which is the main subject of the thesis. Essentially, the aim of the Sisters in Islam movement is expressed as transforming the mentality that views women as inferior to men and defending women's rights within the framework of Islam. The pioneers of the "Sisters in Islam" movement, composed of women from different professions, as Islamic feminists, primarily seek to interpret Islamic sources and find solutions to the discrimination and other problems that women face in the name of Islam. In this thesis study, primary sources about the Sisters in Islam movement were examined using the content analysis method and a general picture of Islamic feminism was taken as an example of the movement. In conclusion, the struggle of the Sisters in Islam movement for their rights in Malaysia and their activism that combines feminism and Islam has an important place in making the Islamic feminist movement heard in both Muslim-majority countries and the West.
