Spanish exile literature after the Spanish civil war: The reflections of exile in the diaries of Max Aub

This study focuses on two works by Max Aub, written in the diary form, in order to examine the intellectual exile and the exile literature which this led to following the Spanish Civil War. Following the defeat of the Republicans in the civil war, Max Aub became an exile in France where he had been a cultural attache. He was later interned in concentration camps and prisons during the Second World War. Later, with the diplomatic assistance of the Republican Cárdenas government of Mexico, he was able to travel to Mexico. After years of exile in Mexico he returned to research a book he was working on to Spain on a tourist visa which he had unsuccessfully applied for many times and which was finally granted after thirty years. He wrote a book titled La gallina ciega: Diario español (Blindman's Bluff: Spanish Diary) using the diaries he kept for several months during his stay in Spain. The book was published in Mexico shortly before the author's death. In this study, in addition to this work by Max Aub, Diarios (1939-1972) (Diaries 1939-1972), which was published as a book after his death, will be examined. The purpose of this study is to explore the reflections of civil war and exile on Aub's works through these texts. In order to do so, this study examines the causes of the civil war and its social backdrop as well as Aub's literary evolution.
