Abstract (EN)
Today, with the increase in high-rise buildings and vehicle traffic, it is thought that traumatic fracture cases in cats and dogs have increased due to falls from heights and traffic accidents. The aim of this study is to evaluate the long bone fractures encountered in cats and dogs brought to veterinary clinics in the Isparta region. This study is a retrospective study conducted on a total of 177 owned animals visiting different clinics in the province of Isparta. The study included 113 cats (63.8%) and 64 dogs (36.2%): information regarding breed, age, gender, and fracture etiology was evaluated. When examining X-ray images: data was generated based on the type of fracture, number of broken bones, the broken bone, the direction of the fracture (left-right), the fracture site (front-back), and the anatomical location of the bone. This data was evaluated. According to the cases evaluated, falls from heights in cats (60.1%) and traffic accidents in dogs (38.9%) were the main causes of fractures in the Isparta region. The fractures that occurred were mostly in the femur in cats (30.0%) and in the radius-ulna in dogs (39.1%). Fractures were mostly observed in the hind limbs. These findings indicate that environmental factors and the consequences of modern life play a role in the occurrence of fractures in dogs and cats. These findings emphasize the importance of safe housing conditions and traffic safety. This study has enabled the creation of data analyses on cat and dog fracture cases in the Isparta region. The aim is to raise awareness among veterinary clinics in the region about fracture cases and to create a reference for similar studies on this topic in the future.
