Abstract (EN)

EFFECTS OF STINGING NETTLE (Urtica dioica), OLEA LEAF (Olea europe), EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus globulus) AND MISTLETOE (Viscum album) ON BLOOD AND LIVER GLUCOSE LEVELS IN ALLOXAN DEPENDET fflPERGLYCEMIA MALE MICES (Mus musculus) Yusuf ÖZAY Department of Biology, M.S. Thesis, 2004 Thesis Supervisor: Asist. Prof. Dr. Vahdettin BAYAZİT SUMMARY The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of neetle stinging ( Urtica dioica), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) mistletoe (Viscum album), olea (Olea europea) and glutril drug on total glucose concentrations of blood and liver of male mice (Mus musculus). They were fit with the pellet diet (17% crude protein ) as ad libitum. One hundred mice were divided ten each groups (n:10, weight: 15-34 gr). Blood glucose concentration was determined by glucometer and organ glucose concentrations were determined by the specthrophotometer. To make the hyperglycemia the mice, average 0.8 ml alloxan (600mg/dl/day) was injected as intra peritoneal one by one week internal and during 30 days. The alloxan was increased in to 349- 398 mg/dl blood glucose concentration and 349-398 mg/dl was accepted as hyperglycemia. After hyperglycemia, aqueous extracts of E. Globulus, V.album,U. dioica, O.europea and glutril drug were given three drops orally every days and were measured blood gucoses levels in two days intervals at eight periods. Blood glucese concentrations at the end of eighth period were obtained 75.3+3.1 mg/dl in E.globulus group; 95.2+2.4 mg/dl in V.album group; 90.9+3.9 mg/dl U.dioica group; 93.7+2.7 mg/dl O.europea group and 96.3+2.3 mg/dl in glutril drug group(PO.OOl). Plants tested have decreased significantly the blood glucose concentration than hyperglycemia period (PO.001). Glucose concentrations of the liver were found more higner than brain, heart, and kidney (PO.001). Glutril and plants tested have decreased in similiar to each other the glucose concentration than hyperglycemic period (P<0.001).
