Byzantine architectural plastics at Comnenian buildings in Istanbul

Abstract (EN)

The Comnenian period (1081 - 1185) had been a period, not only concerned the Byzantium history, but also the Europe and Islamic world with lots of events. In that period, the Crausades acted a great role on affecting not only the period they took place, but also affected the following centuries deeply, especially in politics, religious and financially. While, those events were happening, the Comnene Dynasty were reingning under the reign of the Byzantium which was playing the premier role and being affected mostly. This period, also called Middle Byzantium, is used in most buildings after the conquest of İstanbul, edited and used mainly for the mosques. In that period we ascertained some buildings which reflect that period's building plans. These are, Pantepoptes Jesus Church, St. Theodoros Church, Pantokrator Jesus Church, Sheikh Süleyman Mosque, Ave Theodosia Church, Aya Kapı Church, Kyrios Mary Church, St. Ioannes en to Trulla Church. These buildings also constitute the subject of the prject called "The use of Plastic in Architecture in the period of Byzantium Comnenons in İstanbul. With this work the weorks of architectural sculpture in the middle Byzantine period, materials, construction techniques and decorative motifz would be documented in detail. The resoults will be dole to provide understanding styles of stones objects produced in the capital during Comnenian. The results obtained in the capital during the period of his stylistic features Comnenian stone produced will provide a better understanding.
