Luxury and comfort in istanbul house architecture (18th century)

This thesis aims to discuss the household contents that reflect the casual practice of upper classes of 18th century İstanbul through the changing concept of luxury and comfort. Primary documents of the period have been used to understand the physical and social environment of the ruling classes. Muhallefat manuscripts offer important data in this regard which result from the Müsadere process (confiscation of property after death) which has been applied in the Ottoman state system. According to the data collected, it has tried to understand how these houses belonging to the ruling classes distributed in the city and focused on the terminology used in the documents. Then an issue was examined in a typological analysis method, spatial organization of houses shown statistically and comfort conditions provided by the components were investigated. Finally, the objects located in the components (furniture and furnishings, drapes and textiles, bedspreads, lighting elements, personal care items, fragrances, drugs, kitchen appliances, heating equipments, bathroom and cleaning utensils, writing tools, measuring tools, weapons, harnesses and books) have been classified and investigated by the quantitative analysis method to determine what is perceived as a luxury in the period.
