The relation between obesity and factors causing constipation in people who consult in nutrition and dietitic policlinic of A privite Hospital in İstanbul

This study is runned with 142 people which are randomly selected from applicants of an obesity clinic in Istanbul between April 2018- May 2018. The aim of this study is to investigate relationship between obesity and the factors that cause constipation. Demographic features, nutritional behaviors and constipation problems are questioned by a questionnaire. Constipation problem statements are rely on participants' self-reports. Being pregnant, breastfeeding, using drugs for weight loss, and having a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes or endocrinal, hepatic or renal disease are exclusion criteria of the study. Participants are asked to point out high fiber foods. 53% of them choose vegetables and fruits, 35% of them said legumes, 33% answered as bread and grains, 7% said dairy products and 4% answered as meat and meat products. Also, 15% of the participants indicated they do not have information about this topic. Evaluating Body Mass Index (BMI) of the participants, 1% of the participants were underweight (n=2), 30% were normal weight (n=42), 36% were overweight (n=51), and 33% were obese (n=47). Smoking, alcohol usage, bread consumption, drinking water and physical activities are also questioned. In this study no significant correlation was found between obesity and factors that are thought to be related with constipation but as a result it can be suggested that, in order to prevent constipation lifestyle change is required along with healthy, balanced diet.
