The Greek high schools in İstanbul and the project of İoakimion Greek High School for girls

This present dissertation aims to develop a restoration and re-use scheme for IoachimionGreek High School for Girls, which is a prominent historic building of Fener district ofIstanbul.Educational institutions of minority communities in Fener, as opposed to other districts, hadundergone a more rapid and distinct development in the 19th century. Ioachimion Greek HighSchool for Girls is one of such middle education institutions in Fener.Ioachimion Greek High School for Girls is located on the site constituting of parcels No 8 andNo 9 within the building block number 2286 surrounded by Merdivenli Mektep Street to thenorthwest, Tevkii Cafer Mektebi Street to the southwest. Across from the building isAyiotafitiko Parthenagogion (The Holy Tomb Girls School) and The Fener Greek School forBoys is located to the southeast.The Ioachimion building was built in 1882 with the donation and contributions of thePatriarch Ioachim the 2nd, on this site preferred for its proximity to the Church of Holy Maryand Fener Greek School for Boys. Used as the residence of the Patriarch for a while later thismasonry building was furnished with its original function.The building initially functioned as primary and middle schools however later housed the highschool only. Continuing to function as a school from 1882 to 1988 the building hadundergone some changes both internally and externally although not to a great extent.Within the context of the present dissertation this school building is analyzed in nine chapters;the analytical surveys were conducted, the architectural features, style and deformations wereevaluated and a new re-use scheme is proposed for the Ioachimion Greek High School forGirls.Keywords: Ioachimion, Ioachimion Greek High School for Girls, Schools for Minorities,Vasilakis, Fener, Greek, Catalog.
