Sea in İstanbul social life (1850-1960)

Since Istanbul is an important port city having hosted different civilizations and cultures, the maritime culture has developed considerably and Istanbul community from historical to modern has become a part of this important culture. In our study, Istanbul's maritime culture was handled from the mid-19th century to the middle of the 20th century and examined as sea baths, beaches, ferries and fishing. Firstly, sea baths, reflection of spending time in the sea and utilizing seawater for health were handled. These baths existed from the mid-19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. Secondly, the beaches that the White Russians brought to the city in the last years of the first quarter of the 20th century and where men and women could spend time together in were examined. They gave direction to the city's summer life for decades and left a mark on the city's social and cultural texture and beachwears became fashionable. Thirdly, the ferries complementing the city's sea culture were examined. How the shipping began in Istanbul, the shipping companies' institutionalism, changing maritime policies from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic and the ferries' and ferry operators' impacts on the city and citizens were discussed. Fourthly, fishing, which has left its mark on the city's culinary and commercial culture, was discussed. Seafood and fishing from the Ottoman to the Republic, the fishing season and the hunting types, the importance of bluefish for the people of Istanbul were the topics examined in the last section.
