Abstract (EN)
Violence against women is a violation of human rights and a social problem. This violence, which is seen as an issue of discrimination based on gender, is legitimized by the patriarchal system and gender norms. These systems and norms make women secondary and confine them with the private sphere. When women break out of the patriarchal system and gender norms, they are subjected to pressure by men to restore the order. This repression can take place through violence. Violence against women is frequently encountered from past to present. The first international regulation that legally binds the states parties for the prevention and eradication of violence against women is the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention). The Convention provides guidance and sets standards in combating violence against women. The first regulation in Turkey domestic law based on the Convention is Law No. 6284 on the Protection of the Family and Combating Violence Against Women. Therefore, it has been chosen as the study subject to understand and to ensure their implementation the Istanbul Convention and the Law No. 6284 on combating violence against women. The study aims to examine the Council of Europe Convention on Prevention and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence and the Law No. 6284 within the context of the Convention.
