The hans in İstanbul Historical peninsula and the conservation problems of the hans with courtyards

The changes experienced differently from the past in economics, technology, physical and socio-cultural fields in our modern society show itself in trade and shopping habits, too. The historical commercial buildings in Eminönü-Unkapanı-Beyazıd triangle including Covered Bazaar area are located in the very active area in terms of trade activity. However, it also contains negative factors that spring from structural, physical and socio-cultural differentiation along with the use of the area without inspection. ?Trade function? that has been affected by the appearing of large scale enterprises presenting integrated shopping opportunity for the past 25-30 years, manufacturers? being closely involved with the decisions on management and planning, taking the advantages of modern technology facilities more, and people?s desire of being in a better circumstances and so on, has gained a different dimension in urban life by changing style and moved to large scale plazas and shopping centers. Although Covered Bazaar and surrounding city hans located in an important commercial area of İstanbul have always kept their importance since the early beginning of their formation, they have been badly affected by the production, sales and customer relations of our modern times. Trade points in the city, moving of production methods and shopping centers, and the changes in shopping style has caused important changes in the trade area mentioned above. As time passes historic hans in the region physically worn out because of the functions that are not appopriate to the historic structure of the area and the location of manufacture field. Majority of the hans lost their unique architectonic feauters due to concrete additions built by their sides and courtyards. It is necessary to decentralize the monumental constructions as determining the functions are not appopriate to historic identity and remove the additions do not worth to preserve in order to conserve traditional plan and space conception and increase the visual puality in hans rebuilt their lost parts in accordance with the original construction, conserve the unique street cover of the area and arrange it mostly for the pedestrian usage.
