Jews of İstanbul: Short history, belief, worship and practices

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the short history, congregations, well-known faces, belief, worship and practices, social and culturel lifes of the Jews of Istanbul have been analyzed.In this context, the Jews in pre-byzantine period, Constantinople period and the Ottoman period have been discussed. After that, the Jews of Istanbul during the republic period and post-republic period have been reviewed. In this respect, the Jewish congregants living in Istanbul were dwelled on, information about some well-known Jews of Istanbul has been given. After that, part the belief, worship and practices of the Jews of Istanbul have been discussed, in this frame, such topics as God, holy writ, angel, afterlife, prophecy, messiah, the promised land have been dwelled on. Information about worship, the feast and special occasions has been given. Finally, in the context of the social and cultural life of the Jews of Istanbul, the important practices of the human life from the birth to the death have been analyzed.
