The effect of creative drama method on students' conceptual understanding, motivation and attitudes in teaching the subject of impulse and momentum

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of creative drama method on students' conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivations of 11th grade students in teaching the subject of impulse and momentum in the 2021-2022 academic year. In this study, a mixed method including quantitative and qualitative research methods was used. The research is a quasi-experimental study based on a pretest-posttest control group model. The participants of the study consisted of 11th grade students studying at an Anatolian High School in Osmangazi district of Bursa in the 2021-2022 academic year. While the subject of impulse and momentum was taught with the creative drama method in the experimental group, it was taught with a teacher centered method in the control group, adhering to the textbook. In this study, quantitative data were collected with Physics Lesson Attitude Scale, Physics Lesson Motivation Scale, multiple choice Impulse and Momentum Conceptual Understanding Test and qualitative data with Open-Ended Impulse and Momentum Questions Test. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 24 package program, and qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the quantitative data of the study, it was concluded that there was an increase in the conceptual understanding of the experimental group students who were taught the subject of impulse and momentum with the creative drama method, but there was no difference in conceptual understanding between the experimental group students and the control group students. The creative drama method increased the attitudes of the experimental group students, but there was no statistically significant increase. There was no statistically significant difference in attitude scores between the two groups. Considering the motivations of the students, it was determined that the creative drama method increased the motivation of the students. As a result of the analysis of the qualitative data, it was seen that the experimental group students' conceptual understanding levels were higher than the control group students.
