Abstract (EN)

In this research, the Acqueducts in İzmir which are a water structure of Roman period, are investigated in terms of construction techniques, materials and tools. Water structures, which are one of the most vital building elements of urban life, are the main factors in providing the water needs of people living in a city. Ancient cities were established as close as possible to water resources. However, with the Roman period, the growth and development of the cities increased the need for water in the cities. In order to meet the increasing water demand in the cities, water was needed to be brought from sources at long distances. For this reason, waterways extending from distant sources to cities were built and structures such as arches and tunnels were built on these waterways to overcome various obstacles. These structures were a reflection of the engineering development of the Roman period. In this research, the techniques related to the construction methods of aqueducts from these structures have been compiled from different sources and the construction and usage processes of aqueducts in İzmir have been studied.
