Özet (EN)

Coastal towns have had significant responsibilities in Ottoman Empire while starting and developing of National Economy period. While examining the structure of the economy of the Ottoman Empire?s coastal towns; the acceleration of the transformation devoted to half-colonialism may be determined. After second half of the 19th century, the domestically wholesale of export products have been controlled by foreigners and the trade functions about importation remained as a monopole of domestic non-muslims. Additionally, foreign trade, sea and railroad transportation, harbor and docks, financial and insurance companies were fully in the control of foreign capital owners. İzmir, which is one of the most important coastal towns of East Mediterranean and its hinterland, was composing one of the best models about this subject. After the long everlasting war years, Ottoman Empire left a devastated agriculture country to Turkish Republic. The productivity has been decreased within the damaging situations of war, the young population has been died and, crucial part of agricultural tools especially the animals that are used in agricultural activities were lost. Although the majority of country was composed of rural population, the significant rate of agricultural products was being imported. The use of old techniques in agriculture was also causing low productivity. With the effect of undeveloped network of transportation, although in one part of country the farmers were obliged to burn the products because they couldn?t supply it to the bazaar; another part of country was living with famine. The agriculture in İzmir between Economic Congress of İzmir and World Economic Depression in 1929 was a sector that was trying to gain its buoyancy despite of the troubles.
