İzmir province in some blue flag beaches and coastal recreation areas, analysis of sea water quality in terms of bioindicator microorganisms

Abstract (EN)

The negative quality change in sea water causes irreversible damage to the socioeconomic and cultural structure, city and sea tourism, and wastewater contamination, bioaccumulation and ecological conditions directly affect sea water quality and city life. In the study; It is aimed to determine the level of microbial contamination in seawater and to contribute to the marine microbiology literature and public health with current data. To this end; Seawater quality was measured by bioindicator analyses. During the 2020-2021 swimming season, samples were taken from nine stations. Area descriptions and bathing water profiles of the sampling points were prepared. Location, beach / coastal typology, facility, population density, temperature, stream-wastewater inflows, pH parameters were analyzed on site. Total Bacteria was analyzed by the Pour Plate Method and Fecal Indicator Bacteria was analyzed by the Membrane Filtration Method.Average values; 1.73×103 CFU/mL (Total Bacteria); 7.1×101 CFU/100 mL (Total Coliform), 6.7×101 CFU/100 mL (Coliform), 8.0×100 CFU/100 mL (Fecal Coliform), 4.0×100 CFU/100 mL (Escherichia coli), 2.0×101 CFU/100 mL (Intestinal Enterococci). In the stations, Total Bacteria, Total Coliform and Coliform are 100%, Fecal Coliform is 83.33%, E. coli is 95.83% and Intestinal Enterococcus is 87.5%. Microbial parameter data are shown on the Marine Bioindicator Microorganism Maps. Correlation, Regression, ANOVA Variance Statistical Analyzes were performed. A 44% moderate-very strong and 11% weak correlation was observed between the stations. The correlation between indicators is moderate for E. coli and weak for other parameters. As a result - although within limits - high values; It shows anthropogenic effects in city centers where summer tourism is intense, socialization areas and sampling points of regions lacking wastewater treatment systems. In this study, bioindicators indicate the possible presence of pathogens and the marine pollution-public health correlation. The data reveal the necessity of monitoring and protection studies in dense areas. The effects of the parameters were determined and solutions to fecal pollution were presented. As a result, the thesis is a road map for improving marine microbiological water quality, preventing pollution, safety of beach users, increasing the attractiveness of marine tourism and protecting social health.
