Abstract (EN)
Sleep is one of the most indispensable needs for humanbeings. The importance of sleep will be more clearly understood given how long the lifetime of sleep span sits. As with all age groups, sleep has a positive effect on physical development and academic performance in childhood. Children need adequate sleep and rest in order to maintain their developmental functions,. The school is one of the most important stages in the child development periods, where the positive behaviours acquired by the child before school are reinforced. Insufficient sleep causes nervousness, attention deficit and poor academic performance among chidren at school. This study aims to determine sleep problems and related factors among primary school students in İzmir. This reserach is a cross sectional study. The study was conducted by face to face interviews with parents who have children at primary school and applied to Family Health Centres, which were randomly sampled from each of the 11 districts in İzmir city centre, between 01.05.2018-30.06.2018 and was completed with a total of 1152 people. According to the total CSHQ score 68.9 % of the participants had clinically significant sleep problems. (>41 points). Being in the upper class in multivariate analysis, having no siblings, sleeping later, not reading a book before going to bed, watching television before going to bed, having behavioral and emotional problems, having attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder increase the risk of sleep disorder significantly(p<0.05). Children with poor sleeping hygiene and later sleeping had more sleep problems(p<0.05). Along with increasing sleep problems DEHB, emotional problems, peer and behavioral problems increased significantly(p<0.05). We believe that sleep problems will decrease if parents and children are informed about sleep hygiene, regular and appropriate sleep times and if the parents and doctors are trained to deal with emotional and behavioral problems that may accompany sleep problems.
