Marriage tradition in İzmir province Karaburun district

Culture is a foundational element that reflects the traditions, customs, traditions and beliefs of society and is transferred from generation to generation through the ages. The cultural elements that become traditional in the society constitute the folk culture. Folk culture is most evident in the transitional periods of life. Many customs, traditions, customs, and beliefs have been formed around the transitional periods. The second important transition period in life is marriage. Marriage covers a period that starts with the choice of a spouse and shapes the whole life of the people who get married. In this study, the customs and practices carried out around the pre-marriage, during and post-marriage preparations in the marriage tradition in the Karaburun district of Izmir are examined by identifying, analyzing, and classifying. The first aim of the study is to determine the conditions under which the spouse selection is made, the age of marriage, the applications made to open a good fortune, asking for a girl, cutting the word, engagement, henna night, dowry, wedding ceremony, wedding, nuptials, the days of getting together after the wedding, and family relations. It is the collecting and examination of the customs and beliefs formed around it and the comparison of these information with other regions. The other purpose of our study is to be a pioneer for the transfer of folk culture to other generations by writing down the practices that have sunk into oblivion in the Karaburun marriage tradition. In this research, the reflections of Turkish culture on the marriage tradition in the Karaburun region were recorded by using observation and interview methods. In the first part, the types of marriage and the stages of marriage were determined and examined. In the second part, the preparations made before the wedding, what was done on the days when the wedding ceremony took place, and the days when the bride and groom met with their families for the first time after the marriage were included. In the third part, the cultural changes and updates in the marriage tradition are evaluated. Comparisons were made with other regions under the subject headings in each section. With the comparisons made, the similarities and differences between the marriage tradition of the Karaburun region and other regions have been determined. According to the information obtained from the source persons and the information obtained from the observations, it has been revealed which stages of the marriage tradition in the region were kept alive, which stages were not applied, and which practices had changed.
