Healthcare workers' perceptions of self assessment model in second stage hospitals in İzmir

Healthcare organizations can indentify the areas need improvement and strong areas of organization by self-assessment models. Healthcare organizations can develop policies and strategies in the field of research results. At the same time these results will be able to help organizations to prepare plans for future.Aim: The aim of the study is to determine the self assessment perceptions of the healthcare workers working in the state hospitals in İzmir.Method: The sample of this study is composed of 488 healthcare workers (40,66%) employed in public hospitals in İzmir. Questionnaire form was developed from the Malcolm Baldrige National Excellence Award Healthcare Criteria and adapted into Turkish as a to collect data.. Perceptions of healthcare workers related to business excellence have been measured by a 5-point Likert scale. Factor analysis and reliability analysis of the data were conducted first. Descriptive statistics, t test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and regression are used in the analysis of data.Findings: The most important factors of hospital excellence were identified as process management, focus on patient and strategic planning. The business excellence factors have a great influence on hospital quality, as well. These factors can be listed as process management, focus on patient, strategic planning and measurement, analysis and knowledge management, according to their importance. It is identified that some socio-demographic characteristics of healthcare workers effected the perception of the excellence.Conclusion: In the results of the study, to improve the excellence perceptions of healthcare workers and achieve the business excellence in healthcare organizations, hospitals managerial team has to focus on processes, give importance to be more patient oriented and plan their activities according to their strategies. Perception of the excellence can be varied according to socio-demographic characteristics thus required arrangements must be planned in the field of these varieties.Keywords: Self-assessment, Business Excellence, Healthcare Organizations, Excellence Models.
