Evaluation of museums in Izmir city, on the aspect of museology

With the evolution of technology and society, notion of museum and visitor profiles have also evolved. Adapting to this change, museums became more than just places that exhibit art and historical pieces on displays and became environments that provide different experiences, education and entertainment to their visitors. In this context, subject of the thesis studies the evolution of the museums in Izmir since their foundation and their contribution to the city, under the title of "Evaluation of Museums In Izmir city, On the Aspect of Museology". Museums; as well as being one of the strongest tools to carry on our cultural heritage and archaeological discoveries to the new generations, they are also the best institutions to create awareness on this subject. Museums are the highest regard places to understand the ancient cultures, tell their stories to today's society, visualising them and making it visible. Especially in recent years, the museums in Türkiye, following the changes around the world for modern museum standards, undergone great development and evolution. Museums moved on to more buildings that are modern or the ones that were in historical structures have undergone restoration to present a better experience for their visitors. With the improvement works, their visitor profiles have also developed to a higher standard. Nowadays, museums have moved on from being places for the safekeeping of historical works and became environments that provide beneficial support to the education and social activities of the public while also being great attraction for tourists. In this thesis, we reviewed the themes of the museums in Izmir and their support to the social area they are in. Investigated their development and change since their foundation and emphasised the necessity of museums. Also researched the physical and executive state they are in. In conclusion, Reviewed revealed the change and support the museums provide to the area they are in other than just being places to safe keep history and being institutions that helps creating a connection between past and present while helping to understand ancient civilizations.
