Objective: Irritable bowel syndrome is an important health problem due to high prevalence in society, adverse effects on quality of life and loss of work power. Therefore diagnosis of the synndrome has great importance. The aim of our study is to determine the IBS frequency and the affecting factors in adults in İzmir and to compare the diagnostic power of Rome III and Roma IV criteria. Methods: A prevalence study is planned and conducted among the adults over 18 years of age in March-April 2017 in the provincial centers of İzmir. The data were collected through a questionnaire surveying the socio-demographic characteristics, the Rome III and Roma IV criteria, the Bristol fecal scales for identifying IBS types, alarm septoms, nutrition, alcohol and smoking habits, chronic diseases, medications used, radiological and interventional examinations SPSS 23.0 program is used for statistical analysis, p <0.05 is considered significant. Results: The mean age of the 1315 participants included in the survey was 42 and 55.1% (n: 725) was women. The IBS prevalence was found to be 10.4% according to Rome III criteria and 3.5% according to Rome IV criteria. The most common subtype according to both Rome III and Roma IV criteria was IBS-U. According to Roma III, IBS is more common under the age of 65 (p <0.05). According to Roma IV, IBS is less in the 18-34 age group (p <0.05). IBS was significantly higher in females than both Rome III and Roma IV (p <0.05). It was found more frequently in overweight and obese subjects (p <0.05). Gastritis, reflux, peptic ulcer, constipation were frequent among IBS patients, according to both Roman criteria (p <0.05). Conclusion: Although the prevalance of IBS differs due to diagnostic criteria, it is a common condition which family physicians encounter in their practice. Evaluating the patients according to these criteria contribute to patients' quality of life.
