Cognitive analysis on İzmir ferry buildings

İzmir coast line is in a transformation process with coastal arrangement studies and the main purpose is; by utilizing the positive energy of water, transforming the urban living spaces of the inhabitants into public platforms where they can exhibit themselves and experience the city better. In İzmir, maritime transport is an important potential that strengthens the interaction between the city and the citizen and is a healthy, comfortable and sustainable mode of transportation. On the other hand, ferry piers are the spatial equivalents of the moments in which the citizen starts and ends the experience established by the sea through transportation activity. At this point the main purpose of this study; to analyze the environmental perception of the existing piers on the coastal line in the transformation process, to discover the components that are prominent for the user and to influence the design and to form a base from the user perception perspective regarding the factors that should be taken into consideration in the new ferry port designs that are planned to be proposed in the future. In the first part of the thesis prepared for these purposes; the aim, scope, importance and method of the study are explained. In the second part; the commercial, formal and public changes of the Izmir coastline, which constitutes the scope and context of the ferry piers, are explained. In the third section; The morphological, public and functional places of İzmir ferry piers, which constitute the subject of the research, were analyzed. In the fourth section; focusing on the basic approaches in environmental perception and cognitive process in perception, the fiction, method and results of the field study conducted to understand the role of İzmir ferry piers in environmental perception and coastal identity are presented. In the field study, a questionnaire was applied as data collection technique by face to face interview method.
