J.P. freedom of Sartre and Albert Camus

The main subject of existentialism in which Partre and Camus played role, is huma-nity and freedom of humanity. Therefore, the thesis starts with questioning of exis-tentialism and the lives, philosophies and terminologies of Sartre and Camus have been analyzed in the first and second part consecutively. While this is being made, their mottos, life styles and daily activities have been questioned alltogether. Because existentialism is not a piece beyond life but a philosophy which is the life itself, make people question their lives. The main aim of thesis is to show that these two philosophers attribute diffe-rent meanings to freedom perception due to their different approach on human be-ing,though the philosophers agreed on the idea of humans' problematic existentialism. Here, the abstract of thesis in which two different approaches in two different parts is presented below such as: I. Part: Sartre asserts the idea of freedom made upon humans' ontology of existentialism and claims being human already means freedom. Moreover, human being is condemned to be free. They have to be free since there is no creator and the humans are not created. They are free as they are born once on earth. From that time on, they are responsible from all acts they do. The freedom mentioned in Sartre's bo-oks is consciousness that turns up by humans' awareness, as this consciousness is dep-rived of balance, freedom is fracture in the universe and is nihility. The freedom that Sartre pointed out in later works, took him close to the understanding of freedom and Kant and Rousseau, taking him to the consciousness of communal responsibility, the selection as a matter of fact for everybody. II. Part: Camus described freedom differently than Sartre by asserting that freedom is uprising morality to wipe away injustices and hostility in the world. The word ''no'' is stated against injustices to create equal life conditions requires organi-zed activities to eradicate injustices. However, this uprising is neither a metaphysical upheaval that happened in previous philosophies, nor an ideological uprising such as approaches alike to revolutionary Marxism. The idea of Camus on freedom comes up with only if an individual who uprise against injustices and hostility. At this point, together with defining human being's move who uprise, Freedom takes opportunity to let individual act moderately. Consequently, we can say that these two philosophers actually think alike of centralizing human beings and freedom, however, they are seperated on the idea of understanding humanity, therefore, their approaches vary in different ways.
