Abstract (EN)
One of the most important representatives of modernism prevailing during the first quarter of the 20th century is James Joyce. However, Joycean writing can not be evaluated within the frame of classical modernism because along with modernist elements, there are epiphanies of his own. These epiphanies can be defined as instant enlightenments, and by using them, the past, present and future are coalesced, out of the chronological sequence (Mitchell, 2011: 192). The work discussed in this thesis is Joyce's The Portrait of An Artist As A Young Man, which is full of epiphanies. In this work, Joyce's unique writing style combines with his semi-autobiography, which makes the translation attractive in terms of fictional and linguistic perspectives. The first Turkish translation of this work is by Murat Belge in 1966. Afterwards, the same novel is translated by Veysel Çetin in 2013 and by Fuat Sevimay in 2015. The purpose of this study is to compare these three Turkish translations of The Portrait of An Artist As A Young Man, based on translation strategies. This comparison is based on Lawrence Venuti's domestication and foreignization concepts, Antoine Berman's twelve deforming tendencies, and source-orientedness and target-orientedness strategies. In the light of these concepts, translators' choices of translation strategies, the characteristics of the translated texts emerging as results of these choices and the effect of publishing trends on translated texts have been analyzed.
