Analysing the accompanied concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach and a study for the re-arrangements of the lost concertos for violin

In this study, initially the accompanied concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach and the arrangements that he provided to those pieces in later years were examined and the differences between the arranged pieces and the original pieces were attempted to be presented. Bach is the first composer who provided musical pieces for keyboard instruments in concerto form and the indicated works of art are rather based on the reasons, originated from the institutional and social musical needs than solely based on an idea of creating a new genre of music. It is speculated that Bach arranged his 14 known harpsichords from his previous works that he wrote for solo instruments. The reason for this is the presence of the original model as well as the presence of the harpsichord arrangements that were completed by the composer just like the violin concertos and the Brandenburg concerto. Some of the concertos however, could be able to survive up to this day only with their harpsichord form. It is almost taken granted that those concertos have been composed for other types of concertos in much earlier years. It is considered that the original melodies were lost by the time and there is no source material regarding those concertos except of some wing sections.Another aim of this study is that by examining the harpsichord concertos, conducting the arrangements in compliance with its possible original concerto form. Such arrangements encompass the concertos without having an original model which are considered to be composed for violin. As the main source of this study, the composers own arrangements, the opinions and views proposed by some scientists in the last 150 years and the re-arrangements, previously made have all been utilized.Also in this study, the life of the composer and the Bach family itself has also been dissected deeply. The characteristics of Baroque Era, where the art of Bach reached its peak, the instruments, being developed at that era and the instrumental music, especially emergence of the concerto form in baroque era and its development have it has also been shown and discussed in detailed manner. Finally, Bach's complete works, his own, family pictures, and the expanded genealogy of Bach family are listed.Within the search, conducted in the progress of thesis, no sufficient amount of Turkish Language based sources have been found. It has been considered that this thesis may be a useful source for students and the performers in the future for the studies regarding the concertos which comprise the subject of this thesis and also the arrangements made within the scope of this study are considered to make a contribution to the baroque era instrumental music repertoire.In this study where the qualitative data collection method was used, the document analysis technique was also used. The archive search, which has a prominent place in this study, was also combined with literature search thus the artwork analysis has been conducted.Keywords: Bach, Baroque Period, Violin, Harpsichord.
