Adapting and staging Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe's Faust as a contemporary meddah peformance

Story-telling based staging form is one of the most plain and most ancient forms of performing arts. This form was originally employed in Meddah performances in Traditional Turkish Performing Arts. Achieving a modern staging experience through Meddah Form is the main purpose of this study. Focusing on Goethe's Faust as the main plot and retelling the Goethe's text in a form of solitary narration is the second goal of this study. This dissertation includes notes on background survey for staging and phases of staging process. Main titles of the study for attaining the tools of expression which will guide the staging are the concepts of diegesis and epic narration. On the other hand, Meddah's nature and its tools of expressions are reviewed and analysed. Concurrently, while Goethe was being examined as an artist, underlaying connotations of the Faust text are evaluated within the frame of Modernity concept.
