Özet (EN)
Education, as one of the most deep-rooted social institutions in human history, provides a multidimensional structure that not only encompasses the process of acquiring knowledge but also guides the intellectual, physical, and moral development of the individual. Beyond the transmission of information, education seeks to harmonize the individual with society, instill a sense of responsibility within a system of values, and prepare individuals to become subjects who can meet the demands of social life. For this reason, understanding the conceptual foundations, functions, and the relationship between the individual and society in the context of education carries great significance both pedagogically and philosophically. In this regard, the first chapter of the study outlines the conceptual framework of education; formal, non-formal, and informal types of education as well as various pedagogical approaches are examined. The social and moral dimensions of education—such as values education, ethical training, and its function in socialization—are emphasized; moreover, the impact of education on individual development is analyzed from intellectual, emotional, and psychological perspectives, with particular attention to its contributions to professional and life skills. The second chapter explores the educational philosophy of John Locke, a key figure in the history of modern philosophy. After presenting Locke's life and intellectual background, the study details his emphasis on character and moral education, his approach to reward and punishment, his views on play and toys, and his understanding of physical education and discipline. Locke's proposals concerning education are evaluated in light of the social and cultural conditions of his era, highlighting how the balance he sought between freedom and discipline constituted a fundamental principle of his philosophy of human development. In the third chapter, Locke's educational philosophy is discussed in comparison with modern pedagogical approaches. His principle of tabula rasa, his experiencebased understanding of education, and his emphasis on morality are analyzed alongside contemporary educational perspectives. The roles of teachers and parents in education are examined, and parallels as well as divergences between Locke's views and today's individual-centered, play-based, and freedom-discipline-balanced approaches are presented. Criticisms of Locke's philosophy are also addressed, including issues of childhood perception, his stance on authority, socio-economic limitations, and his religious perspective. This study, therefore, not only provides a theoretical perspective on the conceptual foundations of education but also situates Locke's educational philosophy within its historical context while relating it to modern pedagogical approaches. In doing so, it aims to demonstrate the continuity of fundamental issues in educational thought from past to present and to contribute to ongoing debates in contemporary education.
