A contemporary approach to John Osborne's play 'Look Back in Anger' and a rewriting and staging study of transcending the expressive possibilities of classical drama

John Osborne, with his play "Look Back In Anger" written in 1956, started a new period in English Theater and became an inspiration for angry young writers who came after him. The play, which has explicit traces of its time written, and which through its anti-hero Jimmy Porter, paved the way for harsh criticisms of the social, political, and economic structure on the theater stages, despite its innovative content for its period, it has a very traditional structure in form. The play, which was written and staged in classical dramatic structure, was indited in a realistic style in accordance with the British naturalism movement. Today, our reality perceptions and life practices constantly change and have a transformation in a world where rapid changes in every field along with new technology and media tools, constantly displace our perception and communication styles. This situation inevitably brings the relationship between art and reality into question and takes it to different levels. While the classical drama's structure based on a certain perception of the world, is insufficient to embrace today's world, the distinction between theater and drama makes the theater, which tries to catch the contemporary and the current, seek new ways and new forms that transcend the expression possibilities of classical drama. This study, inspired by John Osborne's play "Look Back In Anger", aims to constitute a current and authentic staging text and staging style that goes beyond expression possibilities of classical drama. In this way, the feeling of anger and being stuck that Osborne told through his own generation, is examined with a new perspective through its counterpart in a generation that lost its meaning and purpose, and our blindness created by daily life is sought to overcome through an artistic perspective. For this purpose, in the first place, a new staging text is constituted within which the dramatic flow was deliberately interrupted via breaking the linear time perception, and then, a new staging style aiming to maintain a structure that was completed with the audience was tried to find out. Finally, the study gives place to the audience's views on the play, which met with the audience following long-lasting theoretical studies and a two-months rehearsal period; and it examines how the audience has reacted to the play.
