Abstract (EN)

The work published under the name of "El-Musîka'l-Arabiyye" is a translation of the arcticle titled "La Musique Arabe" into arabic by Prof. İskender Şelfûn. The original name of the article "La Musique Arabe" is "Encyclopédie De La Musique Et Dictionnaire Du Conservatoire" published in the journal "Music Encyclopedia and Conservatory Dictionary" in Paris in 1922 by French musicologist Prof Jules Rouanet. Professor Şelfun published his translation and assessments, which contains comprehensive information on Arab music, in two volumes in the journal "Ravzat'ul-Belâbîli'l-Musîkiyye" in Cairo in 1927. In the first volume of the work that we have discussed in our study, Prof Rouanet examined the emergence of Arabic music from the pre-Islamic period to the post-Islamic period and its development up to the present day. In the second volume, the author conveyed the biographies of famous mugannis (vocal performer) in early Islamic society in summary. Translating Rouanet's work into Arabic, Prof. Şelfûn, on the other hand, was not content with a mere translation, but strongly revealed his objections to Rouanet's thesis in the footnotes and also made the biographies more satisfying by enriching the content with complementary information he obtained from various sources In our study; The two volume: "El-Musîka'l-Arabiyye" by Prof Şelfun which includes the topics as; the emergence of Arab music, the relationship between music and prosody, the debates on whether Arab music was transferred to the notation in the early periods, the life stories and anecdotes of early Arab mugannis, is translated into Turkish and highlighted the history Arab music. It is hoped this study makes contributions to the researches on Arab music.
