Abstract (TR)
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of fat and faty acid intake and the relationship between phsical activity and obesity in individuals living in TRNC. 210 volunteers whose age has between 18-65 years were selected for this study in different towns of Cyprus including Lefkoşa, Gazimağusa, Girne, Güzelyurt and İskele. This study consists of two parts. First part investigates the avarage daily nutrition consumption of volunteers. In order to do this, food frequency form is used. For the second part of the study, in which physical activity habits were examised , I IPAQ and 24- hour phsical activity form were used. Body weight and body composition measurements were taken using Tanita BC-418 MA III. In this study, 47 % of women 32.2 % men were found to have normal weight, 23.2 % and 37.3 % were pre-obese and 21.8 % and 30.5 % were obese, respectively. Looking at the energy consumption of women average monthly consumption was 2097.2±675.9 kcal. Their daily nutritional intake consisted of 14.4±5.3 % of saturated fat, 17.5±7.3 % monounsaturated fatty acid and 11.7±4.8 % polyunsaturated fatty acid. On the other hand, men had a monthly consumption 2710.9±941.6 kcal. Their daily nutritional intake was 12.9±3.6 % saturated fat, 14.9±3.5 % monounsaturated fat and 9.1±3.04 % polyunsaturated fat. There wasn’t any significant relationship between fatty acid intake and BMI (p>0,05). However, there was a negative relationship between saturated fat intake and classification of BMI (p<0,05). 45.7% of volunteers who joined the study were found to be inactive whereas 32.9% were minimally active and 21.4% were too active. Therefore there wasn’t any statistically significant relationship between physical activity and classification of BMI (p >0,05). In summary, these results showed that volunteers had a high fat and fatty acid consumption but inadequate physical activity. However physical activity levels were not found to have an effect on bodyweight.
