Biochemical response of Scenedesmus quadricauda var. longispina to cadmium and reactive red 120 applications

Abstract (EN)

In present study, effects of cadmium (Cd+2) and Rective Red (RR) 120 on Scenedessmus quadricauda var. longispina was studied. Effects of Cd+2 (0.0, 2.5, 7.5, 15.0, and 30.0 mg/l) and RR 120 (0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/l) concentrations on chlorophyll a, b, total carotene, malondialdehyde (MDA), and proline content of S. quadricauda var. longispina were determined during incubation. Applications of Cd2+ and RR 120 and untreated of algal biomass were characterized by using a FTIR?ATR spectroscopy. High Cd2+ and RR 120 concentrations indicated inhibitory effect on the biomass production by S. quadricauda var. longispina. Amounts of chlorophyll a, b, total carotene in S. quadricauda var. longispina decreased with increasing Cd2+ concentration (p<0.05) in the culture. On the other hand, MDA and proline contents by Scenedesmus species increased under exposed of Cd2+ concentrations. Amounts of chlorophyll a, b, total carotene, MDA and proline contents in the microalga species increased with increasing RR 120 concentrations (p<0.05) in the culture. As a result, applications of Cd2+ and RR 120 affected on the values of biomass, chlorophyll a, b, total carotene, MDA, and proline of S. quadricauda var. longispina.Keywords: Cadmium, Scenedesmus quadricauda var. longispina, Reactive Red 120
