Examining the professional experiences of female football referees from a gender perspective

Football is a sport that has historically been built around the male body, and all its elements, from physical competence to authority, are defined through masculinity. In this context, the presence of women as referees in football should be read not only as professional participation but also as a constant struggle and negotiation area with gender norms, stereotypes, and patriarchal structures. This study aims to examine the professional experiences of female football referees in Türkiye from a gender perspective. The research was conducted using qualitative research and a case study design. In-depth interviews were held with seven female football referees using semi-structured questions. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis and four main themes were determined: "exclusion and rejection", "limitation and obstruction", "prices paid with acceptance" and "gains". The findings reveal that in the male-dominated field of football refereeing, women strive to gain legitimacy not only by demonstrating professional competence but also by resisting gender roles, stereotypes, and the normative meanings attributed to the female body. To this end, women develop strategies such as suppressing and controlling their emotions and behaviors and adapting them to masculine norms.
