Social media and social hypocrisy in cases of violenceagainst women

As the influence of new media on our daily lives has grown, the Internet has become one of the most preferred platforms to follow the agenda. The Internet has been used for various purposes, such as entertainment, education, communication, and keeping up with the agenda of the country and the world. Since their introduction into our lives, social media platforms in particular have given the use of the Internet a new dimension. While the media previously guided mass communication processes, mutual interactions have come into question with the Internet. This has brought individuals not only to a position of consuming content but also to a position of producing content. Violence, which often originates within the family and manifests itself as a mechanism that controls women, now appears through social media, as well. The content on social media has taken a position that reproduces violence against women. This study analyses the view toward women in Türkiye from socio-economic, cultural, and political perspectives and focuses on the murders of Şule Çet and Pınar Gültekin. It also seeks to reveal the social hypocrisy concerning violence against women in Türkiye. X, a new media tool, is the focal point of this study. The results of the study showed hypocritical approaches in the reactions to violence against women and femicide in Türkiye.
