Women's shelters within combating violence against women: The case of Baku

Abstract (EN)
This study included interviews with 50 victims of violence in a women's shelter, which was run by Clean World Women's Aid Association in Baku, the capital of 'Azerbaijan'. In this research, the addressed women are women residing in a shelter. In this study, the attitude of women staying in the aforementioned women's shelter towards violence against women and women's shelter was discussed. At the end of the study, it was concluded that women were subject to violence mostly by their husbands. Besides being abused by their husbands we have also concluded that women have been abused by other people as well. The driver of violence against women was determined to be economic difficulty and unemployment to a large extent. Women's silence against violence , the ineffective or non-existent role of the women's surrounding environment and related institutions not providing the necessary support were also observed in this study. Another important result of the study was that women were satisfied with the services provided at the female guesthouse.It was found that women wanted to start a new life most after leaving the shelter.
