The relationship between attitudes towards gender roles in women's exposure to violence and gender perception: Siirt population

Purpose: Study was conducted to determine the relationship between the attitudetowards gender roles and gender perception in the exposure of women to violence in the Siirt population. Materials and Methods: This analytic cross-sectional study was carried outamong 431 women who visited Siirt/Eruh District State Hospital and Eruh Central Family Health Center between February 2021 and May 2021. Data were collected using an Introductory Information Form, the Gender Roles Attitudes Scale and the Gender Perception Scale. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, One-way analysis of variance, Duncan and Tahmane's T2 tests, Kruskal Wallis test and Spearmanrho correlation coefficient were used in the analysis of the data. Results: : 54.8% of women were exposed to violence. The total mean score from the Gender Roles AttitudesScalewas 129.7±18.2.The mean score from the scale was significantlypositively correlated with women who were university graduates or above, single, working, had health insurance and were not exposed to violence (p<0.05), and these womenhad a more egalitarian attitude.The mean score from the Gender Perception Scale was 88.1±15.9. A statistically significant difference was found between gender perceptions and women who were university graduates or above, working, single, had health insurance and were not exposed to violence (p<0.05). A high positive statistically significant correlation was found between the Gender Perception Scaleand the Gender Roles Attitudes Scale results of the women who were exposed to violence (r=0.635; p<0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, the traditional and gender perceptions of gender role attitude of women exposed to violence are low.Midwives, taking into account gender roles and gender perceptions, should fulfill their responsibilities towards women by using their roles as educators, counsellors, advocates, leaders and implementers to protect women from being exposed to violence.
