Kadızâde Mehmed Tâhir Efendi and his Work Titled "Risâle-i Nûriye"

Shaykh al-Islam Kadızâde Mehmed Tâhir Efendi (1747-1838) was born in Tokat. His father was cadi Ömer Efendi. He received his first education from his father. As it could be understood from the name, his father worked as a qadi in the Ottoman Empire. Later, Kadızâde Mehmed Tâhir Efendi came to Istanbul and took courses from the well-known scholars of his era. Mehmed Tâhir Efendi became a 'mudarris' (teacher) by passing the 'ruûs' exam he took in 1196/1782. Following this position, he was promoted to as a qadi and worked as a qadi in several cities of Anatolia and Rumelia. He served as an emcee for Osman Paşazade İzzet Bey and then, he was appointed as the qadi to Yenişehr-i Fenâr. He obtained the Mecca honour. In 1818, he was appointed as the cadi to Istanbul. He became the 'qadi-ul asker' (i.e. judge of the army) in 1824. He was appointed as the Shaykh al-Islam after Mekkîzâde Âsım Efendi in 1824. In the time of Padishah Mahmud, he worked as the Shaykh al-Islam. He held this position for two and a half year. His biggest service was the fatwa he gave about the janissaries who revolted against the government. He gained the padishah's appreciation through spiritually standing by the government. He retired his position due to his age. Following his retirement, the Shaykh al-Islam wrote the work titled Risâle-i Nûriye. We studied on this work, which mentions forty one topics related Sufism, as the main focus of this thesis. Our thesis consists of two parts. We addressed the biography and works of Kadızâde in the first part and briefly defined Sufism, its purpose and Kadızâde's sufistic view in the second part. In the third part.
