Abstract (EN)

Material is the basic element used to express masses and surfaces in the field of architectural design. Although wood and stone as traditional materials have been predominant in architectural design throughout history, there is an increased search of new materials today. And interior architecture has been remarkably influenced by the composite materials (or, shortly composites) developed as a result thereof. Besides other material types such as natural wood, plastic, stone, textile, and metal, wood composite materials are prominent in the field of interior design today. Wooden composites are preferred particularly for the opportunity to combine different features in a single material and meet colour, tissue, form and shape requirements in the manufacturing phase. As well as being used as interior coating materials, wood composite materials are effectively used in furniture manufacturing. Part II of the present thesis study aims to investigate the historical evolution, types and particulars of and provide an introduction about the wood composites. Part III deals with the evolutionary process of the cafe spaces. Part IV discusses the design principles and analyzes the use of wood composites in several examples of cafe spaces across the world. Finally, the last part, i.e. Part V, investigates the cafe spaces in the pre-specified study area of the city of Adana, and aims to reveal the effects of wood composites on the design. Keywords: Wood composite material, cafe, design
