Probalistic seismic hazard analysis of Kahramanmaras and nearby vicinities

Abstract (EN)

Kahramanmaraş and its immediate surroundings are under the influence of East Anatolian and Deadsea fault zones which have significance in tectonics of Turkey. The long-term energy accumulation in these zones constitutes a very high risk level in terms of seismic hazard. In this study, seismic hazard of Kahramanmaraş and its vicinity was tried to be calculated by using probabilistic seismic hazard method. The study area encloses the area within a circle with a radius of 250 km and centred at 37,575275 N - 36,922821 E geographic coordinates. The earthquake catalogue used in the study comprises 424 earthquakes which covers a time period between 1900 and 2015. The data has been compiled from the catalogues of Earthquake Research Department (DAD) and Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) of Turkey and International Seismology Center (ISC). Seismic sources that could affect the study area have been identified. Seismic hazard curves and co-acceleration maps were obtained by using the available attenuation relationships of the peak ground acceleration. As a result, the intersection points of East Anatolian Fault and Bitlis Thrust Zones are obtained to be the most dangerous regions in the study area. The acceleration values calculated for the study area vary between 0,21 and 0,41 and 0,25 and 0,41 for the attenuation relationship of Boore et al. (1997) and Kalkan and Gürkan (2004), respectively. When the accelerations values of the study area are compared with the acceleration values obtained from Turkey Earthquake Zones Map, it is seen that there are correlations for the southern and southeastern part of the study area.
