Coffee economy and the impact of the coffee industry on the environment

Coffee, obtained from the beans of the coffee plant grown in tropical regions, has been one of the most consumed beverages in daily life in many countries around the world for centurie: Coffee, which has great social, cultural and economic meaning, is one of the most traded agricultural products in the world. The coffee economy is a large economy that includes millions of producers, consumers and retailers worldwide. When businesses selling coffee are considered in terms of commercial activities and employment in categories such as foreign trade, manufacturing, logistics and services, the contribution of coffee to national economies is high. It is also an important source of income for developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Since coffee is an agricultural product, when extreme climatic events affect its supply, this is reflected in coffee price: On the other hand, the methods used in coffee production and consumption can cause serious environmental impact: Problems such as deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity arise in its production. In addition, carbon emissions and energy consumption are quite high in coffee processing, transportation, and consumption processe: Today, sustainability, waste management, and global environmental issues have become important elements of economic development. This study aims to emphasize the environmental impacts of coffee, a subject that has not been studied much in literature, and to encourage consumption with more sustainable principles, while also creating resources for new studies in this area.
