A qualitative research on coffee house regular men's masculinity experiences and perspecti̇ves on gender-based violence

In addition to the rise of the feminist movement has achieved in the field, it is seen that increasing masculinity studies is of essential importance in terms of ensuring gender equality. In parallel with today's changing conditions, different from the hegemonic masculinity that the patriarchal system has placed in idealized patterns, different masculinity categories have emerged that have been pushed to a secondary position, marginalized and subordinated in the patriarchal society. In a society where these different men make themselves accepted and intervene in power, the definition of ideal masculinity and the perspective on gender roles also change and hegemonic masculinity is almost resolved. Within the scope of this study, a qualitative field study was conducted by carrying out in-depth interviews with 18 male participants who were acquainted with the coffeehouse culture and had the practice of going to the coffeehouse in a certain part of their lives. Along with the questions of how these men in different masculinity categories construct masculinity within the framework of their gender roles, how these constructed masculinity perceptions are reflected in gender-based violence, also the dominant discourses of hegemonic masculinity were intended to be overturned by evaluating participants' own subjective experiences, thoughts and expressions. As a result of the study, it is observed that different men in the society are not in a single masculinity category, rather they maintain their lives behind different masks of masculinity with a gender perspective that changes according to time, place, culture and person. It was seen that similar to how sidekick men and other actors in coffeehouses lead the course of a game by changing the moves of hegemonic men, different men in society who take part in hegemonic order, too, can overthrow the dominant discourses of the patriarchal system.
