As a field of cinematographic production, documentary cinema has scientificquality as well as it has artistic quality. The reason of this based upon the meaningthat the audience gives to the documentary beside the work method thatdocumentary cinema carries out while it approaches to its object. According tothis, today the documentary cinema is the leading visual tool for making the worldaround us clear and understandable in other words knowing the existence ingeneral. Giving meaning ensures the audience to think everything that thedocumentary cinema says is true and real unavoidably.Truth and reality are concepts that convert by feeding each other. Accordingto philosophical definition, reality is existence form of the objects for which weproduce information in information obtaining process and the truth makes areference to suitability status of the information we obtained from this object. Thetruth will also change in the work changing continuously based on thechangeability of the reality. It does not only stay with this; the camera as the re-production mechanism of identity intervenes with the object he is directed throughthe dramatization the documentary film shooter apply consciously orunconsciously, in other words it changes the reality. In this case, the real questionwhich has to be asked is: How and what truth can the documentary film which itsspectators attribute an almost unchangeable truth produce by starting from whichreality?This study, searches the answer to this question. For this, in the first chapter,the matter of reality and verity in philosophy history is analyzed, secondly;arguments on the reality of aesthetic theories are discussed; third, cinemaaesthetics concerning reality is mentioned; in the forth chapter, the distortion ofreality in documentary films is explored, based on the semilogical anaylises ofDziga Vertov and Jean Rouch?s films including manifestal quality; in theconclusion, aesthetic possibilities likely to minimise such a reality distortion isdiscussed.
