In-service training in public administration and the case of nurse-training at Erciyes University Hospitals

This study is conducted in order to evaluate the in-service training intended for nurses in 2009 at Erciyes University Hospitals. The population of the research consists of 660 nurses employed in various units and with different status. A questionnaire was formed for the research through relevant literature review. SPSS 17.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) was used for data and frequency analysis. Research data were collected 29.06.2009 through 17.07.2009 and the same set of data were transferred to SPSS for analysis between 18.07.2009 and 01.08.2009. The analysis of the in-service training questionnaire revealed 55.4% of the population took part in in-service training in 2009 four times or more; 97.1% believed that in-service training is fundamental; and 45.3% did not know who the training was planned by. 41% of the nurses who participated the above mentioned in-service trainings were observed to employ all the training information in their professional environment, 39.2% stated that their educational needs were fulfilled, and 60.3% stated that they would be willing to participate future trainings. Among the nurses participating the in-service trainings, 30% stated that there was no performance rating, 38.8% maintained that they did not obtain any economic profit, 77.5% stated that they did not assume a title, and 29.6% declared that their professional respectability did not rise at the end of these in-service trainings.Key words: In-service training, education, hospital, health, nursing
