Street as a public space: Case study Bagdat Street

The population concentration in urban centers , technological developments and new communication tools are directing the architecture, urban design and urban planning to examine and produce new approaches in terms of the human-environment relationship. In the scope of this thesis , our aim is to examine the role of the streets as a public places besides their transportation channel roles. Baghdad Street which is located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul has examined in the context of public use . The study consists of five sections . The first part of the thesis describes the purpose and scope . In the second part , the concept of urban public space and urban space properties were investigated . In the third part, the definition & classification of the streets, user behaviors at the streets and the security concept of streets has been examined. In the fourth section, The Baghdad Street has been examined by its historical and sociological ways. Also there has been a comprehensive survey. At the end of this work, there is a survey which is made by the users of Baghdad Street, about the user density, purpose of the user, walking supporting of Baghdad Street. As a result of the survey, the recommendations has been presented. Keywords: User density, urban public places , social structure, the streets
