Evaluation of public space ? consumption interaction in the case of shopping centers in İzmir

Shopping centers are evaluated within the framework of publicity and consumption concepts and the publicity of shopping centers, as consumption spaces, is evaluated in context of perception, usage and assessment of users in the scope of this thesis.In the first chapter, the problem is introduced and the subject matter on finished studies, aim of the study, and research methods are given. The relationship established between the shopping center and the user, namely between the ?space? and ?public? constitutes the main axis of the problem in the process of perception.The second chapter establishes the conceptual structure of the dissertation. Shopping action, which is becoming one of the vital elements of the consumer society and beginning to use the idea of creating public space as a tool to prepare suitable ground for consumption is the main theme of this chapter.Course of development for shopping centers is investigated within the scope of examples from around the world and from Turkey within the context of publicity and consumption in the third chapter.In the fourth chapter, history of trade and shopping spaces in İzmir is briefly told, method of the study and findings are stated and interpreted.In the last chapter, these conceptual and spatial analyses are evaluated and proposals are given in relation to the subject. Shopping centers, though they are not consumption tools and cannot be reached by every class of society, being the public spaces of the consumption society can be reached as a conclusion according to the conceptual framework and the data collected from the users? perceptions, usage and assessments.
