Evaluation of HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV, and syphilis test results in blood donors

Abstract (EN)

The most common complication after transfusion of blood and blood components are infections transmitted from the components used. Infection with hepatitis B virüs (HBV), hepatitis C virüs (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after blood and blood product transfusion is still the most important public health problem.Safe blood transfusion is the primary goal of all blood centers. Thanks to screening tests and other measures taken, today's blood donations are more reliable than in the past. However, even if blood is considered to be non-infectious, it is not possible to reduce the infectious rate of infectious agents, and the risk of transmission continues at low levels. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate HBsAg, anti-HCV, antiHIV and syphilis screening test results in blood donors who applied to Düzce University Medical Faculty Blood Transfusion Center between 2009 and 2014 and to determine the change in seropositivity rates and their distribution according to years and sex. The samples collected from totatly 11687 blood donors who were eligible for blood donation were run with ARCHITECT HBsAg Qualitative, ARCHITECT anti-HCV, ARCHITECT HIV Ag/Ab Combo, ARCHITECT Syphilis TP reagents which are chemiluminescence system for HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV and syphilis seropositivities.In our study, HBsAg seropositivity was found to be 2.8% of the total. When the variation between genders according to years is examined, it was found that seropositivity of HBsAg in males and females was similar in 2010 and significantly higher in males than females in other years. The seropositivity of anti-HCV was found to be 0,9% of the total, and when the variation was examined between the genders by years, it was found that, it was significantly higher in women than in men in all the years. Anti-HIV seropositivity was detected in 4 of the total male donors (2 donors in 2010 and 2011), but no positivity was detected in female donors. The seropositivity of syphilis was found to be 0,7% of the total, and when the variation between the genders according to years was examined, it was seen that the rate of detection of positivity in men was similar in general.
