Glossary of Kani's divan (Ghazals section): Concordance and functional glossary

Classical Turkish poetry, has a rich vocabulary and cultural background which hosts cultural and literary elements of Arabic and Persian languages as well as regions that Ottoman Empire once reigned such as Balkans, Central Europe and Crimea. Various factors including changes in geography and modal of language caused an estrangement to the culture that establishes the background of poetry. As a consequence, classical Turkish poetry has become harder to understand nowadays. In this thesis work, a dictionary of XVIII. century work, "KaniDivanı", was developed by utilizing contextual index method to unearth cultural richness of vocabulary of classical Turkish poetry and an examination was performed. The poetry were studied and explained in accordance with cultural mentality of period and literary characteristics of poet. Our study on poetry of Kȃnȋ under lyrics part consists of five chapters. In the First Chapter, general information about life of Kȃnȋ, his literary characteristics and his artistic work were given. Second Chapter houses vocabulary in light of his linguistic and wording features. In Third Chapter poetric content was presented using determination of sentiment and imagination in his lyrics. Characters and heroes from poetry were introduced in Fourth Chapter. Suggestions for spelling of vocabulary were given in Fifth Chapter. Lastly, Contextual and Functional Dictionary of (Lyrics Part of) Kȃnȋ Divan were presented as appendix. Vocabulary and cultural background of Kȃnȋ lyrics in particular and literal mentality of XVIIIth century in general were presented with this study.
