Investigation of effect to coated automotive brake disc on braking performance

Abstract (EN)

In this study, in order to improve braking performance by developing friction and thermo-mechanical behavior of automotive brake discs, front brake discs with ventilation channel were coated by using Cr2O3-40%TiO2 plasma sprayed ceramic powder, NiCrBSi-35%W2C NiCrBSi composite powders flame spray and melting, W2C-12%Ni powder, high-speed oxygen fuel spraying (HVOF-High Velocity Oxy-Fuel). Braking performance SAE J2430-BEEP was made in brake tester in accordance with test standards "Dynamometer Effectiveness Characterization Test for Passenger Car and Light Truck Brake Friction Products-Brake Effectiveness Evaluation Procedure". In these tests, braking performances of these discs under different operating conditions such as different speed, temperature, pressure and so on. Micrographs of obtained coating layers were analyzed with an energy dispersive spectrometer by capturing with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Before and after braking tests, surface roughness, weight, wear, thickness loss, lateral secretions, micro hardness values of original and coated disks and their linings were measured. While W2C-12%Ni and NiCrBSi coated discs exhibiting the highest friction coefficient, the highest wear resistance occurred on NiCrBSi-35%W2C and Cr2O3- 40%TiO2 coated disks.
